Cage-free is becoming the new minimum standard for eggs in the US. Albertsons and Kraft Heinz have pledged to sell only cage-free eggs, joining The Humane Society in its animal welfare campaign.

The Senate Agriculture Committee has passed the Deny Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act, a bill opposed to labeling genetically modified foods. The Environmental Working Group is challenging the decision and released the following statement: “We remain hopeful that the Senate will craft a national, mandatory GMO labeling system that provides consumers with basic factual information about their food.”

Food Tank is spotlighting females in the food and agriculture industry this International Women’s Day with the theme, “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality.” They are amplifying the organizations that support women farmers around the world.

Tom Colicchio is inspiring the next generation of food policy activists with his new “Plate of the Union” initiative. College students are challenged with developing and executing a program to drive engagement of the 2016 election on their school campuses.

Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative is hosting the fifth annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids’ “State Dinner” to promote cooking and healthy eating for children. Participants are tasked with creating an original lunch recipe and the selected winners will join a dinner at the White House where their recipe will be served. Submissions are accepted until April 4th.

School Food FOCUS is launching Focus on the Plate, a selection of poultry and legume products available for school cafeterias. These high quality foods are raising the standard and providing kids with healthier meals.
