4-April8_cf_community_newsWelcome to the Guide 2 Good Food’s Community News section, where every two weeks we provide updates on what the Change Food Community is doing as well as report important, time sensitive news. (The Change Food Community consists of Change Food speakers as well as former TEDxManhattan speakers.)

GMOs

  • Advocates of GMO labeling, Food & Water Watch and the Environmental Working Group are pleased to share that even more major food companies will label genetically modified organisms (GMOs). All food products by ConAgra Foods, Kellogg’s, General Mills and Mars, Inc. will now carry the label.

CAGE-FREE EGGS

  • America’s largest food seller, Walmart is now sourcing all of its eggs from cage-free sources. The Humane Society is a long-time advocate, sharing that the policy will be fully implemented by the company in 2025.

ANIMAL WELFARE

  • The Humane Society of the United States announced that Bon Appétit Management Company updated its animal welfare policy to include the following measures:
    • Eliminating tail docking of dairy cows within its supply chain immediately.
    • Working with its main pork supplier—which has already eliminated the inhumane growth promoter ractopamine and is moving to group sow housing—to eliminate farrowing crates (often used during weaning even in gestation-crate-free operations), to add enrichment for all the pigs, and to eliminate tail docking and castration or to use painkillers during the procedure.
    • Shrinking portion sizes of the meat it serves, and offering up more meat-free meals to incent its customers to reduce meat consumption.

FOOD WASTE

  • For three weeks in March Blue Hill and Stone Barns Farm hosted the pop-up restaurant WastED, featuring a menu of food seconds and thirds, helping to relieve the food system of ignored and discarded foods. Pockmarked potatoes and parsnips, pasta trimmings and cured cuts of waste-fed pigs were a few items served to diners. You can see the complete menu here.
  • Photographer Aliza Eliazarov finds the art in food waste. Titled “Waste Not,” Eliazarov’s exhibit features a collection of beautifully composed photos, all styled with discarded food to bring awareness to the $165 billion of wasted food throw out each day in the U.S. She recently photographed Dan Barber’s WastED pop-up restaurant as well.

DEVELOPMENT

  • Seed Capital KY  is breaking ground on the $56 million West Louisville FoodPort in October.
    • “Once complete, the West Louisville FoodPort project will include a vertical farm, a community garden, educational opportunities, retail space, a playground and common area for neighborhood residents, and plenty of space for farmers and food-related businesses to collect, distribute and package products.”
  • The Food-X 2016 accelerator program has selected ten companies for it’s a bi-annual food accelerator program. The companies will participate in a 14-week intensive program to compete for funding and mentoring by successful food and beverage entrepreneurs. See the list here.
  • Michel Nischan’s nonprofit, Wholesome Wave, has hired Ed Kelly as chief expansion officer. Ed is the former CEO of American Express Publishing.
  • Rep. Chellie Pingree (D) of Maine and Tom Colicchio are leading an effort to bring more organic produce to the US from Cuba. Cuba’s pesticide-free agricultural system has successfully produced essentially organic food for the last 25 years and now has the potential to become a large exporter to the United States.

  • Nikiko Masumoto is releasing a new book in May, “Changing Season: A Father, A Daughter, A Family Farm.” Written with her father, David “Mas” Masumoto, the launch coincides with a documentary on the Masumoto Family Farm. Watch the film on PBS in May.

AWARDS

  • Bon Appétit Management Company received the Acterra Award for Sustainability. They have led the food service industry in supporting local agriculture, fighting for farmworkers’ rights, reducing antibiotic use in farm animals and a number of other efforts to lower impact on the environment.
  • Gail Simmons, the New York Times Food Section, Jacques Pépin and Bill Yosses were all honored with the Spoons Across America 2016 Awards for Excellence at the 2nd annual benefit on Thursday, April 7 in New York City. The award is given to those who educate and inspire a healthier, more sustainable food system.
  • Myra Goodman’s Earthbound Farm received the Best Organic Grower Award of 2016 for Monterey County. In operation for three decades, it is the largest organic produce grower in the country.

CALL TO ACTION

  • The BPA in Food Packaging Right to Know Act was introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) This bill would require food companies to label packaging that contains BPA and also instruct the Food and Drug Administration to investigate the hazards of trace exposures to BPA through food packaging. Connect with your senators and tell them to support support S. 821 and that you have the right to know about BPA in your food.

  • Sign the petition to let the USDA know that organic produce needs organic soil. Currently, produce from soil-less hydroponic growing systems is being certified as organic, despite opposition from farmers and consumers who argue that soil-less farming should not be, and by definition cannot be, considered organic. Use your voice to respect the integrity of organic farmers and their produce.
  • Finalists have been chosen for this year’s Real Food Films Contest. Watch the amazing short films that have been chosen as this year’s finalists and then vote for your favorite.   • May 11 – 14 – Seeds & Chips.  Located in Milan, Italy, Seeds & Chips is the first international exhibit and conference totally dedicated to the Food & Technology sector. An event that brings together enthusiastic innovators, companies and investors who are eager to change, and in some cases revolutionize, the way food is produced, distributed, consumed and depicted.  Change Food is a content partner for this event.
  • June 3 – Antibiotics in Food: Can Less Do More? Presented by the Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences, explore the implications of antibiotic usage in food production on both animal and human health, food safety, and our economic systems.   • October 5, 2016 – Indoor Ag-Con Gotham. Held at the Helen Mills Theater in Chelsea, New York, the second annual one-day seminar will gather industry leaders in indoor agriculture to discuss all the prospects for this technology-rich industry. Tailored toward corporate executives from the technology, investment, vertical farming, greenhouse growing, and food and beverage industries, along with hydroponic, aquaponic and aeroponic startups and urban farmers. Speakers include include David Rosenberg of Aerofarms and Paul Lightfoot of BrightFarms.
