I was on a working vacation in the Catskills in New York state the past week and a half. While there, I went to the Delaware County Fair in Walton, New York, a rural place far from New York City. As I walked past booth after booth of greasy, fried, anything on a stick food, it made me wonder what kind of overall impact the food movement is having.
I mean, I know we’re having a great impact, and have had a great impact, on business and a certain type of customer, but, overall, has our message and work reached everyone yet? It was obvious to me it hasn’t. Watching a woman walk past me with a literal tub of just fried potato chips, dripping with oil, and a large coke, was evidence enough.
So what do we need to do? How can we reach everyone and get them to understand that deep fried avocado makes the avocado not good for you.? (That was probably the healthiest thing I saw – except one burger booth did have a veggie burger….) Oh, unless deep fried apples are better….
If I’d felt complacent at all about the work I was doing, the day at the fair made me realize that we all still have so much work to do. I’m wondering if focusing on technology and 1% issues is as worthwhile as delving deeper into simple health education about food to everyone. Or perhaps someone could create an app or system to help facilitate this type of education in a way everyone could have access to and/or understand? And maybe not just in English.
I’m starting my push to get technology to stop spending so much time looking at the next best thing or the biggest profit and to start developing systems and ways for everyone to learn about why good food is so important for all of us. And to find ways to provide the good food we’re talking about. How can we convince the powers that be that there is no success unless everyone is involved?
The Change Food Fest “Growing the Good Food Movement” will take place in New York City on November 12th and 13th, 2016. We will explore and celebrate change happening in the food system. Rather than simply talk about problems, we will actively look at solutions that are leading us to the sustainable food system we wish to see. Our focus will be on both real and visionary change and will include an exploration into seafood, plant based vs meat diets, possible impacts of new businesses and investment money coming into the food space – and much more. You can purchase a ticket or host a viewing party of the live webcast in your local community. Follow the action at #CFFest2016!
